Many senior citizens in the town of Blacksburg have found a way to be involved and sprightly with Active Adults. This program is an umbrella for various activities, events, trips, and more that are designed for older citizens, but open to all residents in the New River Valley.
Joy Herbert is the Senior Program Supervisor for the Town of Blacksburg Parks and Recreations Department.”We do fitness programs, trips, special events, arts and crafts, just a variety of recreational, leisure-type activities,” said Herbert. One of the roles of the Senior Program Supervisor is to develop and promote the existing programs as well as programs that citizens would like to start or create themselves.
“We offer an art club, bridge club, writing club, spinners club, knitters club, and those kinds of programs are offered either weekly or monthly, and those are run by senior volunteers, and we’re really excited about that,”explains Herbert. Active Adults have a wide variety of programs to choose for enjoyment. Anyone is free to join or attend an already established program.
Some activities require registration, but most of the weekly or monthly programs have an open door policy. Recreation events such as mah jongg, book club, party bridge, knitters group, and line dancing do not require any prior registration. Larger events and trips to places such as Roanoke, a mystery dine out, and even New York are available for registration online.
“It’s no membership. We put out a brochure. The brochure is sent out directly to all residents of Blacksburg. Of course, the program is open to anybody in the area who wants to participate in the New River Valley. They can register online, they can come in and register, or phone-in and register,” said Herbert.
